    China’s Xi says India, China are ‘friends, partners’


    HONG KONG, Jan 26 (Reuters) – China’s President Xi Jinping said China and India were “good neighbours, friends and ​partners” as he wished President Droupadi Murmu congratulations ‌on the South Asian nation’s Republic Day, the official Xinhua news agency ‌reported on Monday.

    Xi said that over the past year, China-India relations have continued to improve and develop and are of “great significance for maintaining and promoting world peace and prosperity,” according ⁠to Xinhua.

    Xi said China ‌has always believed that being “good neighbours, friends and partners” is the right choice for both ‍China and India.

    He referred to China and India as the “dragon and the elephant dancing together,” Xinhua said.

    Xi said he hoped that both ​sides would expand exchanges and cooperation and address each ‌other’s concerns to promote healthy and stable relations.

    The nuclear-armed Asian neighbours share a 3,800 km (2,400-mile) border that is poorly demarcated and has been disputed since the 1950s.

    Ties between the countries were shaken by a 2020 clash in which 20 ⁠Indian and four Chinese soldiers died ​in hand-to-hand combat. After that, ​the Himalayan border was heavily militarised by both sides.

    Both countries began improving ties last year after staging ‍a series ⁠of high-level bilateral visits.

    Direct flights resumed in 2025 as both countries stepped up trade and investment flows against ⁠the backdrop of U.S. President Donald Trump’s combative foreign policy.

    Thousands of people flocked to a zoo in Japan on Sunday to say farewell to the country’s last two giant pandas, who are set to return to China on Tuesday.

    Emotions ran high at the Ueno zoo in Tokyo as people stood in line – some for as long as three-and-a-half hours – to see twin cubs Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei one last time.

    This comes at a very tense moment in relations between Tokyo and Beijing. Ties have sharply deteriorated after Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said Tokyo would get involved militarily if China attacked Taiwan.

    The twins’ departure will leave Japan without any pandas for the first time since 1972, the year the two countries normalised diplomatic ties.

    The People’s Republic of China has used giant pandas as a gesture of goodwill towards its international allies and competitors since it was founded in 1949.

    But China retains ownership of all pandas it loans to foreign countries, including cubs born abroad. In return, host countries pay an annual fee of about $1m (£790,000) per pair of pandas.

    According to Tokyo’s metropolitan government, some 108,000 people vied to get one of the 4,400 slots available for one last look at the zoo’s beloved pandas.

    “I have been bringing my son here since he was a baby, so I hope it becomes a good memory for him. I’m glad we could come today to remember them,” one woman told the BBC.

    Another woman recalled witnessing the pandas’ growth journey. “Witnessing their growth, especially since they were so small, has been such a joy,” she said.

    Some visitors were pictured sobbing as they bade the bears goodbye.

    Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei were born in 2021 at the Ueno zoo to their mother Shin Shin and their father Ri Ri, both of whom were on loan to Japan for breeding research.

    More recently, China’s panda loans have coincided with major trade agreements. In 2011, the loan of two pandas to Edinburgh Zoo in Scotland was agreed during negotiations over contracts to supply salmon meat, Land Rover vehicles and energy technology to China.

    Many pandas have been returned to China in recent years – a loan agreement typically lasts 10 years although extensions are common.

    However, the prospects of a new panda loan to Japan have remained uncertain amid the escalating row.

    Japanese prime minister Sanae Takaichi’s comments on Taiwan angered Beijing which views the self-governed island as part of its territory and has not ruled out the use of force to “reunite” with it.

    Both sides have since engaged in increasingly hostile actions and rhetoric towards each other. Early this month, China tightened restrictions on exports of rare earth-related products to Japan.

    A nationwide chocolate recall has been expanded amid a risk of “fatal infections.”

    Spring & Mulberry announced in a Jan. 14 press release — shared on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)’s website — that they have broadened their voluntary recall of Mint Leaf chocolate products to include additional flavors due to possible contamination with Salmonella.

    The affected products were available for purchase online and through select retailers nationwide since Sept. 15, 2025. The recalled products can be identified by the brand name — Spring & Mulberry — as well as the flavor name, lot code and box color.

    The lot code is printed on the back of the chocolate’s packaging and inner flow wrap.

    According to the release, Salmonella can cause “serious and sometimes fatal infections” in young children, the elderly and those with underlying medical conditions or weakened immune systems. Symptoms of Salmonella infection include watery diarrhea (that might have blood or mucus), stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting and loss of appetite, per the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

    Symptoms typically begin six hours to six days after infection and usually last between four and seven days.

    In rare cases, a Salmonella infection “can spread to urine, blood, bones, joints, the brain or other internal organs, causing symptoms related to that body part or system,” the CDC said.

    Spring & Mulberry said that there have been no confirmed illnesses or adverse health effects reported. The Raleigh, N.C.-based company was first alerted to the potential for contamination after a contract manufacturer was conducting routine third-party testing and revealed that finished product tested positive for Salmonella.

    Customers who have purchased the affected lots are advised to immediately throw out the chocolate and not consume it. Customers can request a refund or replacement product by emailing Spring & Mulberry at recalls@springandmulberry.com and providing a photo of the lot code.
