Trump ally Graham commends German chancellor for stance on Iran

Republican US Senator Lindsey Graham praised German Chancellor Friedrich Merz for his tough rhetoric on Iran and suggested that the German leader had “figured out” President Donald Trump.

“Merz said, Iran is gonna fall. God bless him,” Graham, a loyal Trump ally, told journalists on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference on Sunday.

“I think the chancellor of Germany deserves a very good place in history for saying this regime needs to go.”

In mid-January, during a trip to India, Merz had said he expected political change in Iran in light of mass anti-government protests there.

“If a regime can only stay in power through the use of violence, then it is effectively finished,” Merz had said. “I assume that we may now be witnessing the final days and weeks of this regime.”

Graham spoke positively overall about his talks with Merz and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in Munich.

“I was impressed with both of them. They seem to have figured out Trump pretty well,” he said.

Graham, a key voice on foreign policy in Congress, said he had been in touch with the president during the security conference, where world leaders and policymakers meet to discuss global crises and conflicts.

Graham is among the most vocal advocates of a change of leadership in Iran. On Saturday, he addressed a large opposition-organized demonstration in Munich that drew an estimated 250,000 participants.
